In the course of a research, experts managed to establish that during the engine’s idling, at the moment when it is stuck in traffic or at traffic lights, it consumes up to 30% from entire total fuel consumption. Of course, in order to reduce costs, it is necessary to introduce a system that could monitor the performance of the engine when a car is not moving. Almost all modern cars that you can find on Kijiji, like Jeep, Mercedes or Audi come with this system installed.
Earlier, the start-stop system was installed only on hybrid vehicles. However now, we see more and more traditional gasoline cars that are equipped with this feature. Experts believe that in 2-3 years most cars will have this system on board.
How does the Start-stop system work?
The principle of operation of this system is quite simple. When the car stops, say, at traffic lights, the engine is automatically turned off. When pressing the clutch in a car with a manual transmission, or when releasing the brake pedal in case of cars with an automatic transmission, the engine starts automatically. Thus, the motor eliminates the needless idling and saves fuel.
Indeed, the use of this system showed that fuel economy is quite evident, therefore, along with other ways of saving fuel start-stop system may be considered as one of the most effective options.
It is noteworthy that the start-stop system operates at certain conditions. For example, if the engine is cold or if there are some problems with it, even if the driver is not wearing a seat belt – the system will not operate. This prevents disconnection of the motor at the moment when this is not necessary.
Development of the start-stop system
Speaking about the history of its creation, the birthplace of this system is considered Japan. For the first time such system was installed on some Toyota vehicles back in the 80s. At the beginning of the 90th this system was tested with Fiat and Volkswagen cars. And since the 2000s, this system has been installed in many European cars: Renault, BMW, Audi, Citroen, etc. In addition, the mechanism of engine’s automatic stop and start is also being finalized. As a result, a stop-start system with recuperation was made.
The idea of this system is to minimize the load on the engine and, consequently, energy consumption. Therefore, when the motor is running a generator switches off, and it connects back when braking, or when the battery charge has fallen below 75%. With the help of such system, it was possible to reduce fuel consumption, and especially it is relevant with SUVs like Ford Escape or Audi Q7, because as we know perfectly well SUVs tend to consume more fuel.
Of course, despite all the advancement and usefulness of this system, a driver can choose whether they want to use it or not therefore, the system can be switched off at the touch of a button.
Deficiencies of the system
The problem with expenses – you will need an enhanced battery that can withstand constant discharge / charge cycles. However, if we take into account the amount of fuel and therefore money we will be able to save this problem will seam at best minor.
